I went with my friend Ugur downtown to shoot fireworks today. We had a great time and grabbed a few good images. The bridges were full of people (both the one we shot and the one we were on) and it may have been a great picture to ~~shoot~~ photograph all the photographers from the other side of the street ["Maybe one day we'll do you too..." - Finucci brothers], but it was impossible to cross. Traffic wasn’t stopped and some of the images even have camera shake (or should I call it “bridge shake”) due to some of the buses driving by in the middle of some longer exposures. It was a great view to see all the trails that the boats would make, the helicopter and it was just a great view. Ugur is a fun guy and a great photographer. Here’s a link to some of his images.

A couple of days ago I started using strobes again. I was so tired of using them for some reason. I’m easing back into it. This one is shot with a couple of speedlites one on camera pointed backwards to trigger the other one (handheld) by my ~~voice controlled remote light stand~~ wife.

Today we made shish kebabs. It was the first time we did it. To make matters worse we actually had our Turkish friend over for dinner. Talk about risk taking. They turned out alright considering the lack of expertise. They looked so good when I took them off the grill that I thought I should try photographing them. I ended up using a tripod and shooting available light in front of the opened windows. It might have turned out even better outside but I didn’t want them to get cold. Here’s Day 283 with Shish Kebabs.

This is a repeat of a shot done a while back on Day 50. This time it happened outside with the moon in the background and with a new airplane and totally different lighting.

This is a shot of us playing a very fun game at a birthday party. It would take too long to explain the rules, considering that I don’t actually know them very well. Again a new perspective, a bit of post production and here it is.

Here’s another spontaneous shot. I saw these tires with flowers on the side of the road. It just happened that my wife was driving so I asked her to drop me off and come pick me up in a half an hour. I wandered about, and scouted a bit more the area, but these flowers remained my shot for the day.

A fun night tonight. We spent the evening with our friends and neighbors, eating great food and being entertained by fun music. Tolga is playing guitar very well and he knows a ton of songs. Just name one and he starts playing. It was so much fun. It reminded me of Chase Jarvis’ experiment/project/experience/whatever it is, down in Seattle, called Songs for Eating and Drinking. Nothing fancy today in terms of photography. Available light, with tungsten white balance and very shallow depth of field.

Again working on perspective. It took some time to photograph this and I really liked it. You will more than likely see some more images of the same kind as I plan to experiment with this concept. Here’s a not so fresh lime splashing in the water. I picked this image and turned it up side down because I thought it looked like the World Cup in Football. Here’s another blessed day (277).

I really like old cars. Did I say that before? I’m sure I did. As much as I like them, I know very little about past models and specs. I shot this in the mall parking lot. I don’t even know what the make is. I know it was long, big and convertible. If anyone knows who made the “Meteor” let me know in the comments. It’s probably Ford or Mercury. I edited this a bit to take care of whatever the owner did not take care of when restoring this.

I grabbed this underexposed frame while testing a lighting setup for a game the boys were playing. At first they wondered how the flash was triggering and then they started to make silly faces. I obviously edited this image a bit. Day 274.

We are playing soccer more and more. I love it that there are so many places where, with two pairs of shoes as posts, we already have a field and the game is on. We have a few friends that are spontaneous enough that with a couple of phone calls or e-mails we can get out in the evening and play some soccer. For this particular image I believe the kids did not even have posts, it was mostly running with the ball. The game happened later until it got so dark we could hardly see the ball. Day 273.

Here’s a little bit of freshly picked raspberries. I could totally see this image in a calendar or some other place so it is definitely available as stock image. The rain got to the fruit a little bit, but it was only enough to clean them up. It was measured. Another one of my favourites. Our good friend picked these up and a big thank you goes to her and my wife helped with the rain gear so a big thank you goes to her. Shot at 1/60 or so to grab the rain drops. I tried a few shots with on camera flash for fill but I got some reflections from the water flowing down the wood and I liked better the image without the reflections. Here is Day 272.

My son received these letters for his birthday from a far away friend. We devised a new game: played in rounds – use all the letters to make up words; the ones you cannot use, are to be counted as points against you. The fewer points at the end, the better and you win the round. The combinations of rules are endless – bonus: longer words or sentences should help you deduct from the left over points, to mention only one. I’m reading Too Small to Ignore, by Wesley Stafford, CEO of Compassion International. He talks about growing up in West Africa. It’s an amazing book. I can’t stop from imagining how kids play and invent games and come up with ingenious ideas for enjoying themselves. I have read some innovative ideas in this book. I would definitely recommend it. Here’s Day 271.

I’m having a little fun today with this image. I didn’t even use a lot of post production here; the BW conversion could have been done much much better and the layering even better. On a totally different note we watched the FIFA World Cup final – great tournament. The last game could have been better but for a World Cup final, it wasn’t bad. I’m talking from a viewer’s perspective. The players worked hard and it was a great competition. I know this doesn’t have much in common with the photograph – it just happened in the same day so I’m documenting it. This is a project that takes a whole year – good and bad.

I used my cheap camera + stock lens on this one. The most interesting is the effect the polarizing filter had on the sky (sunset camera left, obviously). Day 267 and stubbornly counting.
[Note: I never like the exported final images on web resolution and sRGB color space, they look like supermarket prints. Sorry web viewers.]
